​“朽木”还能雕吗？

以木为纸，以刀代笔，

中国工匠用一双巧手让小小木头身价百倍，

这其中的门道还得从泉州木雕说起。

泉州木雕是福建民间工艺的代表，

小到木偶小像、大到家具建筑，

都可以用木头雕刻而成。

泉州木雕起源于唐代，

到明清时期技术逐渐纯熟，

安海龙山寺里至今仍保留着一尊明朝的佳作——《千手观音》，

作品整体由一棵樟树雕刻而成。

这尊木雕观音共有1008只手，

分别拿着书卷、钟鼓、珠宝等各种法器，

手势也各不相同。

每只手的手心位置都雕有一只眼睛，

千手千眼寓意遍观世间、庇护众生。

木雕的制作流程并不复杂，

但却极考验匠人的技巧与耐心。

先用笔在木头上画出形状，

再用不同刀具将多余部分剔除，

重复多次不断细化，

最后用砂纸打磨光滑。

最困难也是最难得之处是要依照木头本来的纹路设计造型，

需要综合运用镂空雕刻、浮雕浅雕等多类技法，

这样的木雕才能既美观自然又大方实用。

如今的3D建模技术，

使得工艺品的制作成本大大降低，

但却少了那种精心雕琢的工匠精神。

Quanzhou Wood Carving

With wood as paper and knife as pen,

Chinese craftsmen use their hands to make small wood highly valuable.

The secret inside can be traced to Quanzhou Wood Carving. Quanzhou wood carving is a representative of Fujian folk arts.

From small statues to large furniture or even architecture, many things can be carved with wood.

Quanzhou wood carving originated in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and gradually became a mature craftsmanship after the 15th century. In the Longshan Temple, there is still a masterpiece– “Thousand-Hand Guanyin”, made in Ming Dynasty.

The whole work is carved from one camphor tree.

The wood-carved Guanyin statue has 1008 hands, holding scrolls, bells, drums, jewelry and so on, with different gestures.

There is an eye carved in the palm of each hand, which means watching the world and protecting all sentient beings.

The production process of wood carving is not complicated, but it is a test of craftsmen’s skills and patience.

First draw the shape on the wood, and then remove the redundant parts with different knives.

This step has to be repeated and refined many times, and finally polish with sand paper.

The most difficult part is to design the shape according to the original wood grain. Various techniques, such as hollow carving,embossing and bas-relief, will be used to make wood carving works beautiful and useful.

Today's 3D modeling technology has greatly reduced the cost of making handicrafts, but it lacks artisan’s spirit to continuously elaborate.
